The Saint John Jewish Museum was founded in 1986. It started out modestly as a museum with 2 rooms on the bottom level of the Jewish Community Centre featuring Jewish religious traditions and a general history of the community.  It was open during the summer months for tourists who came in on their own or as part of a tour. In 1987, it was recognized with an award from the American Association for State and Local History. Since then the museum has grown to encompass the 3 floors of the community center with additional gallery space, library and archives.  Since 1990 the Jewish Museum has opened for groups from schools, churches and social organizations during the October to Early May off-season making the museum a busy spot year round.
